September Preparedness: Is Bed Bug Prevention on Your Checklist?

September is National Preparedness Month—a good time to check emergency supplies, update household plans, and make sure you’re ready for the unexpected.

But there’s one thing probably missing from your checklist:

Bed bugs.

No, we’re not suggesting you add bed bug spray next to the flashlights and batteries. But knowing how to reduce your risk—and what to do if you spot something suspicious—is a simple form of household preparedness.

Around the DMV, We’re Always on the Move

Living in the Washington metropolitan area means we’re constantly moving between Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland—commuting to work, using public transportation and rideshares, traveling, and moving between apartments, offices, schools, hotels, and other shared spaces.

Bed bugs happen to be pretty good travelers themselves.

They can hitch a ride on luggage, backpacks, clothing, and personal belongings. That doesn’t mean you should worry every time you ride Metro or sit in a waiting room.

It simply means awareness matters.

Traveling? Give the Room a Quick Check

Before unpacking at a hotel or vacation rental:

  • Keep luggage off the bed while you take a quick look around.
  • Check mattress seams and the headboard for suspicious dark spotting, shed skins, or live bugs.
  • Use a luggage rack when available, keeping it away from the bed and wall.
  • Avoid spreading clothing and belongings throughout the room.

You don’t need to turn into a detective.

A quick, sensible inspection can go a long way.

Coming Home? Check Your Luggage First

After a trip, your first instinct may be to put the suitcase on the bed and start unpacking.

We’d suggest a different first stop.

Take a quick look around the seams, pockets, and zippers before bringing your luggage into the bedroom. For clothing that can safely tolerate high heat, follow the garment’s care instructions when laundering and drying.

Your vacation souvenirs can come inside.

Any six-legged hitchhikers can stay behind.

Know the 3 Don’ts

If you find something suspicious at home, remember:

Don’t spray. Don’t relocate. Don’t panic.

  • Don’t immediately start spraying products before you know what you’re dealing with.
  • Don’t move potentially affected belongings from room to room, which could spread bed bugs to new areas.
  • Don’t panic. Take a clear photo or save the insect when possible so it can be properly identified.

Many insects are mistaken for bed bugs. Knowing what you’re dealing with should come before deciding what to do about it.

Prepared, Not Paranoid

Bed bug prevention isn’t about being afraid of hotels, apartments, public transportation, or secondhand furniture.

It’s about recognizing the risks without letting them run your life.

Know the signs. Take sensible precautions when traveling. Be careful with secondhand items. And if something suspicious appears, have a plan instead of immediately reaching for a can of spray.

That’s preparedness we can get behind.
